Essential Oil Terms

Aromatherapy
Treatment relying on the use of essential oils to promote a better quality of life. Essential oils are introduced to the body's systems through the use of inhalation, diffusion, room spritzers, massage, bathing and compresses.

Neat
Undiluted essential oil.

Safety Guidelines

All oils used on children should be diluted.
General rule of thumb for children is 1 - 3 drops of essential oil to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil. For adults, dilute 6-15 drops of oil (2-5%) to 1 tbsp of carrier oil.

Use caution using neat oils.
Some oils are have caustic properties and may irritate skin or the digestive track when applied. Neat oils should not be applied to mucous membranes or sensitive skin areas. Do not consume neat oils without properly researching the herbal safety.

Use caution using Sweet Birch or Wintergreen.
These oils should only be used by experienced herbalists due to the possibility of Salicylate Toxicity (potentially lethal complication). These oils contain Methyl Salicylate, used for pain relief and the common ingredient in items such as aspirin, pepto-bismol, pain rubs, and many OTC products.

Use caution using essential oils during pregnancy.
Some herbs are contraindicated during pregnancy and their essential oils should be avoided or used only externally. Use all herbs cautiously during pregnancy and avoid herbals/oils that have hormonal properties.

Use the following oils with caution during pregnancy:

Cinnamon (safe at culinary usage)
Clary Sage
Cypress
Jasmine
Juniper
Lavender
Marjoram
Nutmeg
Peppermint
Rose
Rosemary

Avoid these oils due to reported abortifacient properties:
Davana
Champaca Bark
Boldo Leaf
Ho Wood
Mugwort
Pennyroyal
Parsley Seed
Rue
Savin
Sassafrass
Red Cedarwood
Santolina
Tarragon
Thuja
Tansy
Wormwood
Wormseed

Regarded as safe during pregnancy:
Bergamot
Geranium
Lavender
Lemon
Mandarin
Neroli
Orange
Patchouli
Sandalwood
Tea Tree
Ylang Ylang

Allergies, epilepsy, and high blood pressure.
Individuals with allergies should test diluted oil on a small test area (crook of arm is suggested). Although no studies have proven a danger between epilepsy or high blood pressure and essential oils, it is believed that certain oils may be contraindicated in individuals so affected. The most common oils cautioned against are fennel, hyssop, and tansy.

Avoid these oils if you have a seizure disorder

Avoid these oils if you have Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)

Avoid these oils if you have high blood pressure

Avoid these oils if you on anti-coagulants (blood thinners)

Do not use when consuming alcohol

These oils can cause photosensitivity (sun sensitivity)

Cap all oils tightly and store after use.
Always keep out of the reach of children. Call poison control and seek emergency assistance if children ingest essential oils. Some oils are light sensitive, store in light proof container and store out of direct sunlight.
